The best-known species of the genus, native to South Africa and globally invasive on Mediterranean, Californian and Australian coastlines. Its yellow flowers that turn pink as they wither and its edible fleshy fruits are diagnostic features. Includes varieties chrysophthalmus and parviflorus, differentiated by flower-eye colour and fruit size. Declared a high-impact invasive in numerous countries.
