Caralluma melanantha (Schltr.) N.E.Br.
Black-flowered Caralluma
South African succulent whose name directly refers to the colour of its flowers: 'melanos' (black) and 'anthos' (flower). Originally described by Rudolf Schlechter as Boucerosia melanantha and transferred to Caralluma by N.E. Brown. The flowers are very dark purple, almost black, with short papillae on the surface of the lobes; a feature that maximises olfactory and visual mimicry of decomposing carrion to attract fly pollinators. It grows in stony soils of South African semi-arid zones.

"Described by Schlechter as Boucerosia melanantha; N.E. Brown combined it in Caralluma. The near-black colouration of its flowers results from a high concentration of anthocyanins, a character shared with very few other Caralluma. Species without verified images in freely accessible public photographic repositories."
