Caralluma mammillaris (L.) N.E.Br.

Nipple Caralluma

One of the oldest-described species in the genus, originally described by Linnaeus as Stapelia mammillaris. N.E. Brown later transferred it to Caralluma, and in some modern systems it appears under the name Boucerosia mammillaris. Endemic to the arid and semi-arid regions of the South African Cape, it grows in calcareous stony soils with sparse accompanying vegetation. Its stems bear prominent tubercles (hence 'mammillaris') and its flowers are darkly coloured.

"Type species of the names Boucerosia mammillaris and Stapelia mammillaris; its nomenclatural history illustrates the frequent reclassifications of the genus Caralluma during the 19th and 20th centuries. Currently recognised as valid within Caralluma s.l. by most botanic gardens."
