Caralluma retrospiciens (Ehrenb.) N.E.Br.
Sahel Caralluma
One of the most common and widely distributed Caralluma on the African continent, broadly spread across the Sahel, Horn of Africa, and West Africa. Originally described by Ehrenberg and relocated by N.E. Brown. A complex species including multiple varieties: var. 'acutangula' (sharper stem angles), var. 'glabra' (glabrous stems), var. 'hirtiflora' (hairy flowers), var. 'laxiflora' (lax few-flowered cymes) and var. 'tombuctuensis' (from the Timbuktu region, Mali). Also known under its synonym 'Desmidorchis retrospiciens' Ehrenb., still used in some modern classifications. Its robust fleshy edible stems have been used as a water and food source in subsistence contexts.
