Caralluma quadrangula (Forssk.) N.E.Br.

Arabian Quadrangular Caralluma

A widely distributed succulent on the Arabian Peninsula, from Yemen and Saudi Arabia to Jordan and the Egyptian Sinai, also known under its synonym 'Boucerosia quadrangula' (Forssk.) Decne. The epithet 'quadrangula' precisely describes the perfect quadrangular cross-section of its stems, one of its most recognisable features. Originally described by Forsskål in the 18th century and relocated by N.E. Brown. Grows on gravels, wadi beds and arid slopes with calcareous or basaltic soils. Flowers are relatively large for the genus, with strongly papillose petals.
