Caralluma piaranthoides Oberm.
Piaranthus-like Caralluma
A South African species described by Obermeyer, whose name reflects its notable morphological resemblance to the genus 'Piaranthus'. Inhabits karoo and semi-arid biomes of southern Africa, growing in rock crevices and poor stony soils. Stems are low, very branched at the base, quadrangular in section, greyish-green. Flowers are small but attractive, with flat petals of contrasting colours. Its resemblance to Piaranthus has caused historical taxonomic confusion; modern molecular studies confirm its placement in Caralluma s.l.
