Caralluma penicillata (Deflers) N.E.Br.
Tufted Caralluma
A succulent from the Arabian Peninsula native to Yemen and Oman, also known under its botanical synonym 'Boucerosia penicillata' Deflers. The variety 'robusta' has thicker stems and larger flowers than the nominal type. Forms dense clumps of erect greyish-green stems, well-adapted to calcareous gravels and skeletal soils of wadis and arid slopes. Its flowers are distinctive for the brush of hairs on the corona lobes (hence 'penicillata', meaning a small brush). Successfully cultivated in botanical gardens of the Gulf region.
