Caralluma lateritia N.E.Br.

Brick-red Caralluma

A species described by N.E. Brown, characterised by its striking brick-red to terracotta flowers (lateritia = brick-coloured), which easily distinguish it from other Caralluma in the region. At least two additional varieties are recognised: var. stevensonii and var. vansonii, showing minor differences in colouration and floral morphology. Grows in dry scrublands and rocky areas of Zimbabwe, Botswana and north-eastern South Africa, usually on sandy or stony soils with sparse organic matter.

science

"The brick-red colour of the flowers is one of the most striking within the genus in southern Africa. Varieties stevensonii and vansonii were described by different authors and their taxonomic validity continues to be reviewed. Herbarium material from Zimbabwe and Botswana is the main taxonomic reference."
