Caralluma hottentotorum

Hottentot's Caralluma

A southern African succulent named in reference to the Khoikhoi people (historically called Hottentots). The species shows considerable morphological variability, with four varieties recognised: var. hottentotorum (the nominal), var. major (larger stems and flowers), var. minor (smaller habit) and var. tubata (flowers with a more pronounced tube). All share quadrangular stems green with brown patches and five-lobed flowers with the characteristic fetid odour. Grows in arid scrublands and rocky areas of the Karoo region and adjacent zones.

format_quote
science

"The circumscription of the four varieties (hottentotorum, major, minor, tubata) follows traditional treatments of the genus. Some modern authors reduce them to synonymy with the type species. Var. tubata is especially striking for its floral morphology with elongated tube."
