Caralluma hexagona Lavranos

Six-angled Caralluma

A notably unusual species within the genus for having six-angled stems (instead of the usual four), a characteristic that gives it its specific name. Described by John Jacob Lavranos from material collected in Somalia and southern Oman. Some collections also recognise the variety septentrionalis, of more northerly distribution in the Arabian Peninsula, which shows minor differences in floral morphology. Flowers are brownish-yellow to green with dark mottling, with the typical fetid odour of stapeliads.

science

"Var. septentrionalis Lavranos, described from northern Oman and Yemen, has slightly narrower floral lobes. The hexagonal stem character is exceptional in the genus and facilitates identification in collections. Rarely cultivated species; mainly available in institutional botanical collections."
