Caralluma hesperidum Maire

Hesperian Caralluma

A succulent described by René Maire from specimens collected on the Atlantic coast of Morocco. It is closely related to Caralluma commutata and some authors treat it as a subspecies under the name Caralluma commutata subsp. hesperidum. Its stems are quadrangular, greyish-green with reddish tints, and the flowers show the five typical triangular lobes of the genus, brownish-yellow with purple mottling. Grows on rocky slopes and xerophilous scrublands of the Atlantic flanks of the Anti-Atlas.

"Described by Maire in the early 20th century. Its relationship with Caralluma commutata is debated: some modern treatments reduce it to a subspecies (C. commutata subsp. hesperidum), while other authors maintain it as an independent species endemic to south-western Morocco. Molecular revision is needed to resolve the question."
