Widely distributed stem succulent in eastern and southern Africa, described by N.E. Brown. Its epithet 'caudata' refers to the acuminate extension of the floral lobes. A polymorphic species with several recognised varieties: var. chibensis (Zimbabwe), var. fusca (darker stems), var. milleri, var. rhodesiaca (Rhodesia/Zimbabwe) and var. stevensonii, reflecting its wide geographic distribution and morphological variability.
