Bulbine mesembryanthemoides Baker

Window Bulbine

Bulbine mesembryanthemoides is one of the most singular succulents in the genus, highly sought after by collectors. Its short cylindrical leaves have translucent 'windows' (fenestrations) at the tip, converging evolutionarily with Haworthia and Fenestraria. This adaptation allows light to reach the photosynthetic tissues while the plant remains almost buried in the soil to avoid desiccation. Endemic to the arid South African Karoo.

"The leaf windows (fenestrations) are a notable evolutionary convergence: they arose independently in Bulbine, Haworthia, Fenestraria and Frithia. The species is delicate in cultivation; the main mistake is watering it on the same schedule as other succulents. Only collectors experienced with mesembs should cultivate it."
