Braunsia apiculata (Kensit) L.Bolus
Apiculate Braunsia
Small creeping succulent subshrub endemic to the Western Cape of South Africa, particularly the Little Karoo and the slopes of the Swartberg Mountains. It forms compact mats of very fleshy fusiform leaves, glaucous green with an apiculate tip (short, sharp point) that gives the species its name. Its daisy-like bright pink-magenta flowers are an ephemeral spectacle in spring. A typical Succulent Karoo mesemb adapted to poor, very well-drained soils.

"Like all Karoo mesembryanthema, this species has a cycle opposite to American cacti: it grows in winter and estivates in summer. Never water during the hottest months. Flowers only open in direct and intense sunlight."
