Aloe microstigma Salm-Dyck

Karoo Aloe / Small-Spotted Aloe

Karoo Aloe is a medium-sized species native to the arid plains and rocky slopes of the South African Karoo and Namaqualand. Its grey-green leaves display characteristic white spots and reddish marginal spines; under stress it develops an overall purplish-pink flush that makes it highly ornamental.

Cabo del Norte, Cabo Occidental, Cabo Oriental (Sudáfrica) y sur de Namibia
Ecosystem
Flat open areas, steep rocky slopes, and among shrubs in desert and dry shrubland biome

Morphology

Leaves

Lanceolate leaves 30–50 cm, grey-green with irregular white spots; brown-red marginal spines. Under water or cold stress the entire leaf takes on a highly decorative purple tone.

Stem

Short stem under 20 cm, erect or slightly decumbent. In a pot it may develop a short pseudo-trunk with persistent dead leaves.

eco
Flowers

Simple or forked inflorescence 50–80 cm; racemes of tubular pink-red to orange-red flowers, paler at the tip. Blooms in winter (June–August Southern Hemisphere).

Propagation Strategy

Basal Offsets Easy
Season: Spring–Summer Rooting: 2–4 weeks
Success Rate 85–90%
  1. 1 A. microstigma produces offsets in dense clusters; separate when they are 8–10 cm tall with well-developed roots
  2. 2 Remove with a disinfected knife cutting cleanly at the base; carefully clean soil from the roots
  3. 3 Allow to callous in a dry, ventilated spot for 2–3 days before planting
  4. 4 Plant in well-drained mineral substrate; first watering after 10–14 days to encourage rooting in the new container
Seeds Medium
Season: Spring Rooting: 2–4 weeks to germinate
Success Rate 55–65%
  1. 1 Sow fresh seeds on coarse sand + perlite; do not cover with substrate
  2. 2 Keep at 20–26 °C under a transparent cover with bright indirect light
  3. 3 Germinate in 2–4 weeks; gradually ventilate from the second week
  4. 4 Transplant when seedlings reach 3–4 cm in height

Key Tip

The dense clusters of A. microstigma create a striking visual effect; it can be grown intentionally in groups

warning
Common Mistake

Not separating offsets when the colony exceeds the pot's capacity

calendar_month
Repotting

Every 2–3 years in spring or when the offset colony overflows the pot.

eco
Fertilizer

Balanced succulent fertilizer at 50% dose, once in spring and once in summer.

format_quote
science

"A. microstigma endures some of the most extreme water regimes in the genus: in its native central Karoo habitat it can go up to 10 months without significant rainfall. The purple flush under stress reflects betacyanin and anthocyanin synthesis as a photoprotection mechanism, studied as a model in CAM-plant stress physiology research."
