Astroloba pentagona is the type species of the genus Astroloba, recognisable by its distinctive pentagonal stem cross-section, which reflects the arrangement of its 5 leaf ranks. Endemic to the Western Cape, it grows mainly around Calitzdorp and Oudtshoorn in the Little Karoo.
