Astroloba egregia (Poelln.) Uitewaal
Excellent astroloba
Astroloba egregia (from Latin egregius, 'excellent, outstanding') is one of the most elegant species in the genus, described by von Poellnitz and transferred to Astroloba by Uitewaal. Endemic to the Western Cape of South Africa, it is distinguished by the exceptional quality and regularity of its 5-ranked spiral of triangular leaves, which explains its specific name. It is highly valued in succulent collections for its distinguished appearance.

"The name 'egregia' reflects the descriptor's criterion: this species is considered the most elegant in the genus for the perfect regularity of its 5-ranked spiral. Scarcely photographed in the field; reference images correspond to cultivated specimens in Cape collections."
