Apteranthes tessellata is a stapeliad distributed across the Arabian Peninsula (Saudi Arabia, Yemen, and Oman). Distinguished from the rest of the genus by a strongly tessellated (checkered) pattern on its flowers, with pronounced alternation of light and dark colors resembling a chessboard. Habitat is arid rocky scrubland of the Arabian region.
