Argyroderma rooipanense L.Bolus

Rooipan split rock

Argyroderma rooipanense is a mesemb of the family Aizoaceae endemic to the locality of Rooipan in Namaqualand. It is one of the most range-restricted species in the genus, known only from its type locality. Its name directly references the toponym Rooipan ('red pan' in Afrikaans, from the ferruginous color of the local soil). Like all Argyroderma species, it forms paired bodies of very succulent leaves with excellent lithophytic mimicry.

science

"A. rooipanense is a critical example of microendemism in the Cape quartz fields. Its known distribution in a single locality makes it a sentinel species for monitoring the degradation of the ferruginous quartz fields of Namaqualand."
