Argyroderma reniforme L.Bolus
Kidney-shaped silver stone
Argyroderma reniforme is a mesemb endemic to the quartz fields of Namaqualand. Its name 'reniforme' (kidney-shaped in Latin) describes the characteristic body profile formed by its two fused succulent leaves, which shows a lateral curvature reminiscent of a kidney shape. "The reniform shape of A. reniforme is an extreme example of the morphological plasticity of the genus Argyroderma in response to the shape of habitat pebbles. Its curved profile may reduce lateral mechanical stress from surrounding pebbles."
