Argyroderma planum L.Bolus
Flat silver stone
Argyroderma planum is a mesemb endemic to the quartz fields of Namaqualand. Its epithet 'planum' refers to the relatively flat top of the body formed by two succulent leaves, giving it a lower, flatter profile compared to other species in the genus such as A. delaetii or A. testiculare. This morphology may be an adaptation to a specific type of flat pebbles in its native habitat.

"The flattened profile of A. planum reduces the surface area exposed to direct solar radiation, possibly a thermal adaptation to avoid overheating in the hottest months of the year."
