Argyroderma patens L.Bolus

Open silver stone

Argyroderma patens is a mesemb of the family Aizoaceae endemic to the quartz fields of Namaqualand, near Springbok. It stands out for its more open or spreading form (patens, meaning 'spreading' in Latin) compared to other species in the genus, with the cleft between the two leaves comparatively wider. Its showy bright pink or intense magenta flowers are among the most striking in the genus.

Morphology

Leaves / body

Pair of succulent leaves with a more pronounced central cleft than in other species. Smooth surface, greyish-green to silvery color. The opening gives it the appearance of an open mouth.

eco
Flowers

Large, very showy flowers in bright pink or intense magenta, with numerous linear petals and a large mass of yellow stamens. Considered among the most spectacular in the genus.

eco
Roots

Thick, deep roots penetrating cracks in the quartzitic substrate; act as water reserves.

eco
General appearance

Plant at ground level with an open two-leaf body. The characteristic cleft and pink flowers make this species very recognizable among collectors.

Requirements

Light
Full, intense direct sun; lack of light causes etiolation and loss of characteristic compactness.
Watering
Sparse in autumn-winter (every 3–5 weeks); total suspension in summer.
Temperature
Optimum 10–25 °C; tolerates brief frosts when dry. Pink flowering requires seasonal thermal differential.
Soil
Mineral sand or quartzitic gravel, no organic matter. Instant drainage.

Season: Autumn Rooting: 1–3 weeks
Success Rate 55–65%
  1. 1 Sow in autumn in fine quartzitic sand without covering seeds
  2. 2 Keep moist under glass at 15–22 °C; germinates in 1–3 weeks
  3. 3 Gradually reduce watering when seedlings appear
Clump division Medium
Season: Autumn Rooting: 2–4 weeks
Success Rate 55–60%
  1. 1 Divide at the start of the growing period in autumn
  2. 2 Allow cuts to callous 2–3 days and plant in pure mineral sand

format_quote
science

"The wider opening of the leaf cleft in A. patens is a key diagnostic character. This morphology is thought to facilitate flower opening under high irradiation conditions, maximizing stamen exposure area to pollinators."
