Argyroderma luckhoffii L.Bolus

Luckhoff's split rock

Argyroderma luckhoffii is a mesemb of the family Aizoaceae endemic to the Luckhoff area of the Free State, South Africa. It forms paired bodies of very succulent, smooth, greyish-green to silvery leaves, virtually indistinguishable from the pebbles of the soil it grows on. Like all species in the genus, its flowers emerge from the central cleft between the two leaves in autumn and winter.

Morphology

Leaves / body

Pair of thick, succulent leaves fused at the base, ovoid to subglobose in shape, smooth surface, greyish-silver to pale green in color. The cleft between the two leaves is narrow and well defined.

eco
Flowers

Solitary flowers emerging from the central cleft, with linear petals in bright yellow or pale pink, and numerous stamens. Flowering in autumn-winter.

eco
Roots

Thick, deep root system, adapted to penetrate hard mineral substrates and store water and nutrient reserves during summer dormancy.

eco
General appearance

Very compact plant, flush with the ground, almost buried, with only the upper part of the leaves visible. The mimicry with surrounding pebbles is remarkable.

Requirements

Light
Full direct sun throughout the day. Without maximum exposure the plant loses its characteristic coloration and etiolates.
Watering
Sparse watering every 3–5 weeks in autumn and winter; complete suspension in summer. Substrate must dry out completely between waterings.
Temperature
Optimum 10–25 °C; tolerates brief frosts on dry substrate. Withstands extreme dry summer heat while dormant.
Soil
Very coarse mineral sand or quartzitic gravel, no organic matter. Extremely fast drainage is essential.

Propagation Strategy

Seeds Medium
Season: Autumn Rooting: 1–3 weeks to germinate
Success Rate 50–65%
  1. 1 Sow in autumn in fine quartz sand without covering seeds
  2. 2 Moisten with mister and cover with glass or transparent film
  3. 3 Keep at 15–22 °C; germinates in 1–3 weeks
  4. 4 Ventilate briefly each day and do not overwater
Clump division Medium
Season: Autumn Rooting: 2–4 weeks
Success Rate 55–60%
  1. 1 Divide only at the start of the growth period in autumn
  2. 2 Separate leaf pairs with a scalpel or fingers; allow to callous for 2–3 days
  3. 3 Plant in pure mineral sand; do not water until new growth is visible

"A. luckhoffii is one of the few Argyroderma species with distribution in the Free State rather than Namaqualand, suggesting independent evolutionary divergence in response to similar edaphic conditions but in a different biome."
