Argyroderma carinatum L.Bolus
Keeled Argyroderma
Argyroderma carinatum L.Bolus is a mesemb endemic to the Steinkopf region of northern Namaqualand in South Africa. Its specific epithet 'carinatum' (keeled) refers to the prominent keel or ridge on the abaxial face of its leaves, a distinguishing feature compared to other species in the genus. It grows in white quartz fields, where its silvery surface provides effective camouflage among pebbles.

"The ventral keel of A. carinatum is a singular morphological feature within the genus Argyroderma. L.Bolus considered it sufficiently distinct to justify its status as an independent species, though some authors have treated it as a variety of other related Namaqualand species."
