Anacampseros varians Sweet

Color-variable anacampseros

Anacampseros varians, described by Sweet, is a Cape succulent whose epithet 'varians' alludes to its marked chromatic variation: the leaves can range from soft green in shaded conditions or moderate temperature, to intense reddish-purple tones under full sun or during cold months. This behavior is distinct from A. variabilis, which shows morphological variability between populations; in varians the variation is chromatic and seasonal within the same individual. Its ephemeral pink flowers maintain the pattern of the genus.

"The seasonal chromatic variation of A. varians is an excellent model for studying the regulation of anthocyanin biosynthesis in succulents in response to temperature and UV irradiation. Its relationship with A. rufescens is under taxonomic review."
