Anacampseros varians, described by Sweet, is a Cape succulent whose epithet 'varians' alludes to its marked chromatic variation: the leaves can range from soft green in shaded conditions or moderate temperature, to intense reddish-purple tones under full sun or during cold months. This behavior is distinct from A. variabilis, which shows morphological variability between populations; in varians the variation is chromatic and seasonal within the same individual. Its ephemeral pink flowers maintain the pattern of the genus.
