Anacampseros variabilis Poelln.
Variable anacampseros
Anacampseros variabilis, described by Poellnitz, takes its name from the notable phenotypic variability it shows among different wild populations in the Northern Cape. The shape and coloration of the leaves can vary considerably: from flat and spreading rosettes to compact and more erect ones, and from light green to intense reddish-green depending on exposure conditions. Its ephemeral pink flowers are consistent throughout the species. This phenotypic plasticity is unusual in the genus and has caused historical taxonomic confusion.

"The phenotypic plasticity of A. variabilis is a case study in evolutionary ecology: different populations of the Northern Cape express morphologies adapted to local microhabitats (soil, exposure, water availability), without significant genetic differentiation."
