Anacampseros ustulata E.Mey. ex Sond.

Scorched anacampseros

Anacampseros ustulata was described by Ernst Heinrich Friedrich Meyer and validated by Sonder. Its epithet 'ustulata' (burned, scorched in Latin) refers to the dark or bronzed appearance of its leaves when exposed to intense full sun, which can be interpreted as a photoprotection strategy through anthocyanin accumulation. Native to the Karoo, one of South Africa's most arid regions, this species is well adapted to the extreme conditions of high irradiation and scarce rainfall.

science

"The dark coloration of A. ustulata in full sun is analogous to that of Sedum spurium 'Dragon''s Blood' and Echeveria subsessilis: an anthocyanic response under light and thermal stress that protects chloroplastic DNA."
