Antegibbaeum fissoides (Haw.) Schwantes ex C.Weber

Keeled antegibbaeum

Antegibbaeum fissoides is the sole species of its genus and one of the most distinctive succulent plants of the Robertson Karoo in the Western Cape of South Africa. It forms small dense clumps of paired triangular succulent leaves of glaucous green, each bearing a sharp keel on the abaxial surface. It flowers in winter with pink multi-petalled blooms that open during the day — typical mesemb behaviour. Its range is very restricted, making it a fragile endemic of great interest to collectors.

Propagation Strategy

Seeds Hard
Season: Autumn (September–October in southern hemisphere) Rooting: 10–21 days
Success Rate 60–75%
  1. 1 Sow in fine mineral substrate (70% sand) slightly moist.
  2. 2 Cover with glass paper to retain moisture.
  3. 3 Germination temperature: 15–20 °C.
  4. 4 Transplant seedlings after 8–10 weeks.
Clump division Easy
Season: Late summer / early autumn Rooting: 3–4 weeks
Success Rate 85%
  1. 1 Remove the whole clump from the substrate.
  2. 2 Separate groups of 2–3 leaf pairs with their own roots.
  3. 3 Allow to callous for 2–3 days in the air.
  4. 4 Plant in fresh substrate and water after 5 days.

Key Tip

Strictly respect the seasonal cycle: water in autumn and winter, total drought in summer.

warning
Common Mistake

Watering in summer, which causes rapid basal rot.

calendar_month
Repotting

Every 3–4 years or when roots emerge through the drainage hole

science

"Antegibbaeum fissoides is an extremely localised endemic of the Robertson Karoo. Cultivation requires mimicking the inverted seasonal pattern of the southern hemisphere: watering in winter (October–March in the northern hemisphere), strict drought in summer. Cultivated specimens rarely exceed 10 cm in diameter in a pot, making them perfect for mesemb collections in small spaces."
