Calibanus hookeri (Lem.) Trel.
Calibanus, desert boy
Calibanus hookeri is the best-known and most widely cultivated species in the genus Calibanus. It forms a spectacular globose, corky and fissured caudex from which dense tufts of rigid, linear leaves up to 60 cm long emerge. In its natural habitat it grows in xerophilous scrubland and oak-pine forests of the Mexican highlands, between 1,000 and 2,500 m altitude. Its caudex can reach 60–80 cm in diameter in century-old specimens, making it one of the most impressive caudiciform plants in Mexico.
