Calibanus caespitosus (Scheidw.) Rose
Tufted calibanus
Calibanus caespitosus is one of the rarest species in the genus Calibanus, endemic to Mexico. It forms a subterranean or semi-buried caudex from which dense tufts of rigid, linear grass-like leaves emerge. Unlike C. hookeri, its caudex tends to be more elongated and less globose, with a more caespitose (tufted) base. It is a highly sought-after collector plant and uncommon in cultivation.

"Species with stable taxonomy but scarce in collections. Some specimens in cultivation labeled as C. caespitosus may correspond to juvenile forms of C. hookeri. Verify caudex shape and foliage tuft density for identification."
