Bowiea volubilis Harv. ex Hook.f.

Climbing onion

Extraordinary bulbous geophyte from southern and eastern Africa whose green, photosynthesizing bulb remains fully exposed above the substrate. During the growing season it produces a dense tangle of very slender, twining, highly branched stems that can reach over 2 m in length. It is one of the most fascinating plants for succulent and caudiciform collectors due to its singular life strategy.

format_quote
science

"The bulb must always remain exposed; burying it causes rot. During summer dormancy stop watering completely. The stems are deciduous: they dry up at the end of the season and resprout from the bulb at the start of the next cycle."
