Beaucarnea oedipus Rose

Oedipus beaucarnea

Beaucarnea oedipus Rose is one of the rarest and most threatened species in the genus. It is endemic to a small area in the state of Chiapas, Mexico, and is listed as Critically Endangered (CR) by the IUCN. Its name references King Oedipus of Greek mythology, possibly alluding to its singular morphological characteristics. Wild populations are extremely small and extraction for the ornamental trade has contributed dramatically to its decline.

"B. oedipus is one of the most endangered plants in Mexico. The few remaining populations in Chiapas are under severe pressure from land conversion and livestock farming. Ex situ conservation programs in Mexican and European botanical gardens seek to preserve genetic material. Acquisition of cultivated specimens must ensure legal provenance."
