Albuca viridiflora Jacq.

Green-flowered albuca

Unusual for its fully green flowers (viridiflora = green-flowered). Has broad strap-like leaves. Prefers shadier, moister habitats than most albucas. The tall flower spike bears many small green flowers. Its wider distribution towards Zimbabwe and Mozambique distinguishes it from strictly Cape albucas.

Propagation Strategy

Bulb division Easy
Season: Winter – early spring Rooting: 3–4 weeks
Success Rate 85%
  1. 1 Extract the mother bulb in winter when leaves enter rest.
  2. 2 Carefully separate lateral bulblets with a clean knife.
  3. 3 Treat cuts with activated charcoal or sulphur powder.
  4. 4 Plant in moist organic substrate and keep in partial shade.
Seeds Medium
Season: Spring Rooting: 2–4 weeks to germinate
Success Rate 55%
  1. 1 Sow fresh seeds in moist organic substrate at 20–22 °C.
  2. 2 Keep in partial shade with constant moisture.
  3. 3 Seedlings need 3–5 years to reach flowering size.
  4. 4 Do not allow the substrate to dry out at any point in the juvenile cycle.

Key Tip

Grow in partial shade; unlike most albucas, it does not need full sun.

format_quote
science

"The entirely green flowers of A. viridiflora are unusual in the plant kingdom; this cryptic colouration is believed to be an adaptation to attract specific pollinators in the shaded riparian understorey environment where showy colours are less effective."
