West African tree originally described by Kurt Sprengel and relocated by Isaac Henry Burkill into the genus Ceiba. Species from tropical forests and wooded savannas of West Africa. Some modern sources include it as a synonym of Ceiba pentandra or Ceiba guineensis; its taxonomic delimitation requires revision.

Verify current status in POWO. The epithet "occidentalis" geographically places it in the western continent of Africa."
