Kapok tree native to West Africa, mainly from coastal and inland regions of Guinea, Ghana, Senegal, Nigeria and neighbouring countries. Produces kapok fibre used in craft and industry. Sacred tree in several Sub-Saharan African cultures. Includes varieties ampla and clausa which differ mainly in fruit size and opening.
