Deciduous tree of the Malvaceae family native to Mexico and Central America, notable for its twisted or spiralled trunk that gives it its name ("anfractuosa" = sinuous, curved). Belongs to the group of spiny ceibas. It grows in seasonally dry tropical forests.

"Basionym: Bombax anfractuosum DC. (Prodromus, 1824). Transferred to Ceiba by M. Gómez. Species endemic to Mexico (Guerrero, Oaxaca, Chiapas) and Central America. The spiralled trunk is unique among ceibas and is the main morphological diagnostic character."
