Bursera glabrifolia (Kunth) Engl.
Paper-bark copal / Smooth-leaf Bursera
Deciduous tree endemic to Mexico, very similar to Bursera fagaroides but with glabrous (hairless) leaves and an even more colorful bark. It is used in a special way in the Zapotec region of Oaxaca, where small figures carved from its soft wood are known worldwide as 'copal alebrijes', an export craft from Oaxaca. The wood is very light and easy to carve.

"The carving of live wood of this species is an ancestral Oaxacan practice. The artisans of San Martín Tilcajete and Arrazola (Oaxaca) use almost exclusively B. glabrifolia for their alebrijes. The green wood is soft and easy to carve; upon drying it hardens moderately."
