Bursera bipinnata (Moc. & Sessé ex DC.) Engl.
Chinese copal / White copal
Deciduous tree endemic to Mexico, distinguished by its bipinnate (twice-divided) leaves, a unique trait within the genus Bursera that gives the species its name. It produces one of the most prized copal resins for ceremonial use in Mexico, especially in the Zapotec and Nahua traditions of the state of Oaxaca. The white resin of Chinese copal is purer and more aromatic than that of other species in the genus.

"The bipinnate leaves of this species distinguish it from all other Bursera at first glance. It is the species of greatest ceremonial importance in the Zapotec tradition of Oaxaca. In cultivation, resin harvest can be done by incising the bark without permanently harming the tree."
