Kataf myrrh
Aromatic shrub from the arid zones of Somalia, Yemen, and the Arabian Peninsula, originally described by Forsskål (18th-century Danish naturalist) and combined by Engler. The name 'kataf' comes from Arabic and refers to the resin collected from this plant. Produces a balsamic resin used since antiquity in incense, perfumery, and medicine. One of the best-known Commiphora in the Arab aromatic trade.

Precautions / Toxicity
Pure resin may cause skin sensitisation. Ingestion without medical supervision is not recommended. Avoid internal use during pregnancy.

"C. kataf is the parent species of subspecies turkanensis (RN-CMPH-00009), restricted to north-west Kenya. It is also related to Commiphora molmol (true myrrh; RN-CMPH-00010, pending addition), with which it shares resinous characteristics and is confused in trade."
